Canva and the dangers of DIY marketing
I would hate Canva if I were a designer.
For one, it has democratized design.
Anyone can pretty much design anything. We’ve all become DIY designers.
It means less business for designers.
As important, it has elevated the bar for designers.
Whenever I’m not impressed by a designer’s work, my first thought is, “I could have done this in Canva” or, worse, “it looks like this was done in Canva”.
Designers need to spend more time understanding what their clients want and provide better and higher-quality work.
A Canva for content has yet to appear for writers, although tools like Wordtune, Grammarly, and Jasper (Formerly Jarvis) show that AI is a force to be reckoned with.
We’ve entered a world of creators versus technology, or creators AND technology.
It’s game on for creators who need to embrace technology but also become even more creative, bold, and willing to take risks.
